NewJeans made headlines today by introducing a new stage name. This announcement was a long-time coming as they stopped using “NewJeans” for their group activities last November and held a contest to select a new stage name. They have promised to come stronger and bolder with a new name and a concept.
On Friday, February 7, NewJeans revealed their new stage name “NJZ” through their separate Instagram and confirmed their appearance at ComplexCon Hong Kong.
NewJeans’ decision to adopt a new stage name has been met with resistance from ADOR, which is currently locked in a legal battle with the group over their contract.
In an official statement, ADOR stated, “We are deeply regretful that the members unilaterally made this decision before a legal judgment on the validity of the exclusive contract between ADOR and the NewJeans members has been made.”
They continued, “We will do our best to protect the brand value of NewJeans.”
However, they also added, “We are always ready to meet with the NewJeans members or their legal representatives to resolve any misunderstandings and discuss future plans for NewJeans.”
They celebrate a new chapter in their career by updating their official social media account to “njz_official”. Following their contract termination notice to ADOR last year, the group has been self-managing their activities.
In response, ADOR and HYBE have pursued legal action to confirm the validity of the exclusive contracts, and have taken steps to maintain their authority. It also includes seeking an injunction to restrict NewJeans’ business dealings.
A hearing on March 7 will address ADOR’s injunction to control NewJeans’ advertising contracts, while a trial on April 3 will determine the validity of the label’s exclusive contract with NewJeans.
Meanwhile, their first appearance as NJZ will be at ComplexCon, a 3-day music festival happening at the Hong Kong AsiaWorld-Expo from March 21-23.
