Court Orders BTS’ Suga to Pay 15 Million Won Fine for DUI

BTS Suga

Min Yoongi, better known as Suga from the globally acclaimed K-pop group BTS, was previously involved in a drunk driving incident in August.

On September 27, Judge Lee Yoo Seop of the Seoul Western District Court’s Summary 7th Division handed down a summary order sentence to BTS member Suga, ordering him to pay 15 million won in fines for violating the Road Traffic Act by driving an electric scooter while intoxicated.

The 2nd Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office, under Chief Prosecutor Chu Hye Yoon, issued a summary indictment order on September 10.

Notably, the fine amount was not disclosed. This summary indictment process allows for written hearings to determine penalties, skipping the formal trial.

On August 6, at approximately 11:40 PM, Suga was stopped by police in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, while riding an e-scooter. He lost his balance and fell. A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content level of 0.227%, exceeding the license revocation threshold of 0.08%.

The Haegeum rapper faced police questioning on August 23, 17 days after the incident. He apologized, saying that he was sorry for letting everyone down and was deeply reflecting on his actions. Suga accepted responsibility for his actions during the investigation and later penned a heartfelt second apology.

Suga is currently serving as a social service worker as part of his mandatory military service, set to be discharged in June 2025.
