Kris Wu, also known as Wu Yifan, a Chinese-Canadian singer and ex-member of EXO has been handed a prison sentence in China on charges of sexual assault.
As per the Korean media outlets, the Beijing City No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court has dismissed Chris’s appeal and upheld the original verdict of a 13-year prison sentence for charges of rape and mass indecency.
The court stated that Wu Yifan exploited the intoxicated state of the female victims to engage in sexual intercourse, which qualifies as rape. Additionally, he orchestrated lewd activities involving a group of people, making him culpable for group indecency as the main perpetrator. The ruling affirmed that the facts were evident and supported by sufficient evidence.
In July 2021, Chinese police arrested Kris on charges of sexual assault. A woman who identified herself as Kris’ girlfriend confessed that he used social media to approach women, pretending to offer casting opportunities or fan meetings. It was revealed that there were eight women, including some who were minors, and victims of sexual violence.
In the initial trial conducted in November of last year, the Beijing City Chaoyang District People’s Court handed down a sentence of 11 years and 6 months in prison for rape and 1 year and 10 months in prison for group indecency to Kris.
Additionally, the court ordered that he be deported after serving his sentence. Although Kris Wu appealed the initial trial outcome, he was unsuccessful in avoiding imprisonment.
