This year, two ASTRO members, Cha Eunwoo and Jinjin, were set to enlist in the military. However, only Cha Eunwoo will be hitting pause for national duties, whereas the ASTRO leader has been granted an exemption.
Jinjin will not be serving in the military. Fantagio recently announced that he has been exempted from mandatory military service because of an autoimmune disease.
In South Korea, nearly all able-bodied men must complete about 18 to 21 months in the military. However, exemptions are granted for specific medical conditions that prevent individuals from serving.
The exact type of autoimmune disease affecting Jinjin hasn’t been shared publicly. On June 2, his agency confirmed that a thorough medical examination by military officials determined he was medically unfit for active duty. The statement reads
Due to health issues related to an autoimmune disorder, Jinjin underwent a detailed medical examination by the Military Manpower Administration and was deemed unfit for military service.
While his condition does not affect daily life, he requires regular hospital visits for check-ups and management. Therefore, based on medical judgment, it was determined that group living situations like military service would be challenging, and he was exempted from military duty.
Our agency prioritizes the artist’s health above all else and will continue to support his activities accordingly. We sincerely thank the fans who have for their unwavering support and ask for your continued interest in Jinjin’s future activities.
This news means the 29-year-old rapper won’t have to take a break from his music career for military enlistment, which is a relief for fans. At the same time, it brings to light a personal health challenge he is managing.
He debuted with ASTRO in February 2016 and has since released many self-produced singles. He has also ventured into musicals, starring in ‘Winter Wanderer’ (2023-2024) and ‘Dream High’ (2025).
Meanwhile, all ASTRO members, including Rocky, will reunite for a concert, Stargraphy, in Seoul on June 7-8. Cha Eunwoo will start his active-duty service on July 28, with a scheduled discharge in January 2027.
