IU has been appointed as the new public relations ambassador for Incheon International Airport Customs. She takes over from NewJeans, who ended their ambassadorship earlier this month due to agency-related issues.
The appointment ceremony was held on July 25 at Terminal 1, with the idol-actress and customs officials in attendance.
Incheon Airport Customs stated, “IU is widely loved for both her singing and acting,” and explained, “She has built a deep connection with the public through consistent sharing and good deeds,” as the reason for her selection.
They added that her image fits the customs’ role of preventing illegal imports like drugs and weapons.
IU shared her feeling at the nomination, “I often arrive through Incheon Airport and have seen customs officers working hard. I’m glad and happy to be appointed as an ambassador.”
She also shared her strong determination in her new role: “I will actively take the lead in promoting the complete prevention of illegal items like drugs,” adding, “I’ll do my best.”
Meanwhile, NewJeans ended their role as customs ambassadors on July 15. The contract ended after recent issues with their label made it difficult to continue.
NewJeans was appointed as ambassador in March 2024 but since they unilaterally ended their contract with ADOR in November, they are on hiatus.
Members are currently involved in a legal dispute, with a court-led mediation session set for August 14. If mediation fails, a ruling will be issued on October 30. Incheon International Airport Customs attempted to renew their contract through discussions with the label, but the negotiations fell through due to the ongoing conflict.
IU will follow in the footsteps of previous Incheon Airport Customs representatives, Girl’s Generation, BLACKPINK, and NewJeans.
With the new ambassador now stepping in, Incheon Airport Customs looks forward to strengthening its public outreach and education efforts.
