Kim Soo Hyun has taken a firm stance against online trolls and cyberbullies. They filed a complaint with authorities against malicious posts and comments that have been damaging the artist’s reputation.
The 37-year-old actor received an increasing amount of hate comments when his dating scandal with the late Kim Sae Ron broke in early March. As per the allegations, he dated the late Kdrama actress when she was not a legal adult. While he admitted dating Kim Sae Ron, he has repeatedly denied allegations of being in a relationship with her when she was a minor.
The controversy has severely impacted Kim Soo Hyun’s career, he has lost endorsement deals and his Disney+ drama is facing delays amid the backlash. The Kdrama actor was removed from the variety show “Good Day” after the controversy escalated. Currently, he is being held responsible for Kim Sae Ron’s death, who committed suicide on her birthday, February 16. As a result, he is facing intense criticism and calls for a boycott from fans.
On Tuesday, April 15, his agency Gold Medalist announced legal action against online harassment stating
Recently, malicious posts, comments, and false information targeting our artist Kim Soo Hyun have been rampantly posted and spread online. In particular, baseless speculative articles and unconfirmed claims have been repeatedly posted, giving the public a false perception and damaging the artist’s reputation.
Malicious slander, spreading false information, personal attacks, and sexual harassment prevalent in online communities and social media are serious crimes that should not be taken lightly. Based on active tips from fans and our own monitoring, we submitted a complaint to the investigative agency on April 14, citing charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act and insult under the Criminal Act.
The behavior of “cyber wreckers” who create fake news and produce videos and shorts that lead to cyberbullying, taking advantage of anonymity, is also serious. As the identities of cyber wreckers are being revealed and legal responses are being taken, we will also take strong measures against overseas platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) in collaboration with overseas legal representatives.
We plan to pursue additional lawsuits against malicious posts that damage the artist’s reputation and will continue to take strong legal action to protect the artist’s rights in the face of clear criminal behavior. Thank you.
