‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Confirmed by Netflix, Creators Sign Multi-Year Deal

Netflix has confirmed the second installment of the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters is officially in the works. On March 12 (local time), the streaming giant confirmed the sequel to its most-watched movie of all time. 

As per reports by BBC and other outlets, Netflix has signed a multi-year writing and directing partnership with the movie’s creators, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, to continue developing the franchise.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the sequel is reportedly in the very early stages of development. The original film took approximately seven years from pitch to screen. Sources suggest that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is targeting a release window around 2029.

Director Kang shared her excitement about continuing the story. She feels proud as a Korean filmmaker that audiences want to see more Korean stories and characters.

Maggie Kang shared, “There is still so much to show in the world we have created,” adding, “This is just the beginning.” Appelhans shared that these characters are “our family” and the film has become their “second home.”

The original film revolved around the world of K-pop with Korean mythology. It follows the members of the global girl group HUNTR/x—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who live double lives as demon hunters. They protect humanity from supernatural threats like the sinister boy band SAJA Boys and the ancient demon lord Gwima. The sequel is expected to explore more of this rich universe. Director Kang previously hinted that future stories could focus on the backstories of members Mira or Zoey.

Since its release in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has surpassed 500 million global views to become the most-watched film in Netflix history. The film’s soundtrack, featuring 12 original songs, has been just as impactful. 

The breakout hit “Golden” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks. It made history last month by winning the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media,  the first time a K-pop song has ever won a Grammy.

The film is also competing at the upcoming Academy Awards in two categories (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song). The 98th ceremony will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre.
