Former EXO Member Kris Wu Death Rumors Circulate, Authorities Stay Silent

Rumors about former EXO member Kris Wu’s death are spreading once again and causing confusion online. As of now, none of these claims has been confirmed, and Chinese authorities have made no official statement.

On November 13, several online communities and some media outlets in Taiwan and China began circulating claims that Kris Wu had died while serving his prison sentence.

One Taiwanese outlet reported that someone claiming to be a “prison classmate” said prison guards told inmates that Wu had “died suddenly.” There were even rumors that he was killed by a local gangster. However, these stories have no verified evidence, and the identity of the so-called “classmate” is unknown.

Much of the latest rumor wave began after a Taiwanese financial influencer mocked the idea of Kris Wu going on a hunger strike. This led people online to guess that Wu might have died from starvation.

Some people also claimed that Wu’s family had “lost contact” with him, but again, these claims came from unverified sources and cannot be confirmed.

On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, posts discussing his alleged death were quickly removed. Searches for related topics showed “content not available,” which hints that authorities were restricting the spread of these rumors.

This is not the first time Kris Wu has been the subject of death rumors. Similar claims spread earlier in March and April this year, including stories about a hunger strike or fights in prison. None of these were ever confirmed.

In March, the Canadian government reported that “four Canadian citizens were executed in China this year on drug trafficking charges.” Some speculated that Wu Yifan was among them. However, because Wu Yifan has never been accused of drug trafficking, many now believe that the statement does not refer to him.

Chinese police have even stepped in before. Earlier in 2025, the Jiangsu Police revealed that a viral photo showing Wu in a prison uniform was actually photoshopped. Authorities often warn that spreading unverified rumors online can lead to legal penalties.

In November 2022, Beijing’s Chaoyang District People’s Court sentenced Kris Wu to 13 years in prison for rape and for organizing sexual activities.

After completing his sentence, he will be deported to Canada, where he holds citizenship.

In a separate case, he was fined 600 million RMB (about $83.8 million) for tax evasion. As of early 2025, reports said Chinese authorities were looking into additional tax issues, which could potentially extend his sentence.

Other than this, there has been no official update on his health, condition, or daily status inside prison.

Because there is no confirmation from Chinese authorities, all current reports about Kris Wu’s death should be treated as unverified rumors.

Until an official statement is released by Chinese government agencies or the prison system, nothing about Kris Wu’s supposed death can be considered true.
