The death of MBC weathercaster Oh Yoanna has taken a tragic turn with the discovery of a suicide note. The note reveals that she struggled with bullying in the workplace, allegedly at the hands of her colleagues.
Before becoming a weathercaster, Oh was an idol trainee. Born in 1996, she eventually joined MBC in 2021 as a public weathercaster. Her appearance on the popular TV show “You Quiz on the Block” in 2022 made her a household name.
On January 27, a shocking report by Maeil Shinmun revealed that the late MBC weathercaster left behind a 17-page suicide note on her cell phone. Written on September 15 of last year, the note exposed the harassment she suffered at the hands of a fellow weathercaster.
According to the note, the colleague made a false report against Yoanna, unfairly blaming her for a mistake. The situation escalated when the colleague intentionally prevented her from leaving work and publicly criticized her appearance on TV.
She left behind final wishes in the suicide note, stating, “I want my funeral to be held outdoors, like a party. I want everyone to wear nice clothes, eat finger foods, and celebrate my life with laughter. Don’t bury me anywhere; just scatter my ashes at sea.”
In the note, she poured out her heart: “I’m just so tired of living. I hate that I couldn’t fully love what I loved. I also hate that the people who loved me tried to save me, even when it was hard for them.”
After the latest development, many are calling for accountability and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
On January 28, MBC announced that they are ready to launch a probe into the alleged workplace harassment only if her family requests so. The 28-year-old, who joined MBC in 2021, reportedly endured harassment from March 2022 until her tragic passing in September 2024. Shockingly, Oh Yoanna had alerted MBC officials to the abuse before her death, yet the network failed to investigate further.
