Lee Jong Won and former Weki Meki member Kim Doyeon have been reportedly cast as the leads in the upcoming melodrama.
On July 18, My Daily exclusively reported that the duo has been approached to lead drama, Wish Upon Moonflower (literal title).
The story is set during a fictional wartime period and centers on Yang Cho Seol, a woman who crafts swords inside a prisoner-of-war camp, and Baek Je Hee, a high-ranking general from an enemy nation who has defected.
Lee Jong Won plays Baek Je Hee, a top general of the kingdom Gaero-guk who defects under mysterious circumstances. Though he is admired for his looks, Baek is described as emotionally detached, violent, and untrusting.
Lee Jong Won began acting in 2018 and slowly gained fame through supporting roles in well-known series like Hospital Playlist 2, My Unfamiliar Family, and The Spies Who Loved Me. Recently, he starred in back-to-back hits, including Knight Flower, Bad Memory Eraser, and Brewing Love.
Kim Doyeon takes on the role of Yang Cho Seol, a woman who creates swords while living among prisoners. On the surface, she appears fragile and graceful, but beneath that is a quiet strength and resilience that earns respect even in harsh surroundings. It’s her most challenging role yet and marks her first time leading a drama.
Kim originally debuted as a K-pop idol in 2016 after competing on Produce 101, where she earned a spot in the project group I.O.I. She later re-debuted in Weki Meki under Fantagio and balanced both music and acting careers.
While active as an idol, she appeared in dramas in smaller roles, such as playing younger versions of the lead characters in One the Woman and Jirisan. Following Weki Meki’s disbandment in 2024, Kim moved to the UK to study acting before returning to Korea to fully focus on acting.
Pray Upon Moonflower is written by Jang Yoo Ha, the screenwriter behind Netflix’s Doona!, and filming is scheduled to begin soon.
