Netflix has confirmed TYGO, a new Korean action movie set in the same universe as Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction films. The movie stars the beloved action star Ma Dong Seok (Don Lee), Squid Game actor Lee Jin Uk, and BLACKPINK member Lisa.
The Korean media first reported the Extraction Korean spin-off in October, and now Netflix has confirmed the production of TYGO.
Netflix Announces Production of ‘TYGO’
On December 5, Netflix officially announced that TYGO is now in production. The film is directed by Lee Sang Yong, who created the hit action series The Outlaws and The Roundup. TYGO is produced by Big Punch Pictures (Don Lee’s company) and AGBO, which is run by the Russo brothers, known for the Avengers films. The film also brings in Nova Film and B&C Content as co-producers.
Netflix shared that TYGO is a spin-off of the Extraction franchise and shares the same universe. The project has been in development for years and is now moving forward with a full Korean team and cast.
Story Overview and Main Characters
TYGO centers on Tygo, played by Don Lee. Tygo is a former child soldier who grows up to become a mercenary. He has a close-knit team that feels like family to him. During a mission, things go wrong, and his teammates are kidnapped by a criminal group. Tygo then fights his way through Korea’s crime world to save them. The movie focuses on his dangerous rescue mission and his struggle to survive.
- Ma Dong Seok leads the movie as Tygo, and brings his trademark powerful action style. TYGO is a project he has personally worked on for years, and he said the film adds a strong Korean flavor to the global Extraction universe. He is known for starring in many blockbuster action movies such as The Roundup franchise, Badland Hunters, The Outlaws, and Train to Busan.
- Lee Jin Uk plays Arman Choi, the boss of a dangerous criminal organization. His character stands against Tygo, and the two enter a high-stakes conflict. Lee Jin Uk said he is a fan of the Extraction series and is honored to join this new film. Lee is well known for his performances in Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3, Sweet Home, Dark Nuns, and several other hit titles.
- Lisa of BLACKPINK plays Leah, Tygo’s friend and teammate. During a mission, she ends up in serious danger. TYGO is Lisa’s first major movie role and her first action film. After appearing in The White Lotus Season 3, Lisa called being in an action movie “a dream of mine”. She is excited to work with such experienced actors.
The Creative Team Behind ‘TYGO’
Director Lee Sang Yong is known for creating some of Korea’s biggest action hits. His films are famous for strong fight scenes and fast-paced storytelling. TYGO also brings in martial arts director Heo Myung Haeng, who has worked on many action films with Don Lee.
AGBO praised the project, saying they were excited to explore the Extraction universe from a Korean point of view. They highlighted how Korean cinema is known for its world-class action and strong storytelling.
Connection to the ‘Extraction’ Franchise
TYGO is part of the growing Extraction universe. The original Extraction (2020), starring Chris Hemsworth, became one of Netflix’s most-watched movies ever with over 90 million households watching it in the first four weeks. Extraction 2 stayed at No. 1 on Netflix for seven weeks and reached more than 123 million views. Netflix and AGBO are now expanding the franchise with new characters, locations, and stories.
Earlier this year, Netflix also announced another new Extraction series starring Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, and Natalie Dormer. This shows how quickly the universe is growing.
TYGO is the ninth collaboration between Netflix and AGBO, following Extraction, Extraction 2, The Gray Man, The Electric State, and other major titles.
Cast Reactions
Don Lee said he is very happy to finally bring a project he has prepared for years to the screen. He said TYGO brings “distinctly Korean identity into the global Extraction universe.” He can not wait to “unleash its explosive energy on audiences worldwide.”
Lee Jin Uk said joining a franchise he already loves is a “great honor” and promised to give his best performance.
Lisa thanked the team for the opportunity to work with “such incredible actors”, and said it is a “dream come true” to make her movie debut in such a large action film.
TYGO Release Schedule
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for TYGO. However, with production confirmed and the main cast locked in, industry expectations point to a likely global release in late 2026 or early 2027 once filming and post-production are complete.
