IVE’s Wonyoung has won a major victory in court against infamous YouTuber Sojang once again!
The K-pop idol secured a 50 million won payout from the YouTuber who spread defamatory content about her.
The Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Appeals Division 9-3, presided over by Judges Yoon Jae Nam, Seon Ui Jong, and Jeong Deok Su, delivered a verdict on January 22. The court sided with plaintiff Jang Wonyoung in her damages lawsuit against Sojang.
The 20-year-old K-pop star had previously emerged victorious in the first trial as well. The court had ordered her to pay 100 million won plus interest to the IVE member. Since she failed to respond, the court accepted Jang Wonyoung’s claim in its entirety.
After the initial ruling, Sojang hired a lawyer and filed an appeal. The appellate court reviewed her arguments and still ruled in favor of Wonyoung but ultimately reduced the damages to 50 million won for defamation.
Although the appellate court has made a decision, IVE’s agency, Starship Entertainment, has chosen to appeal the ruling. A final verdict is expected in April.
Taldeok Camp is a notorious YouTube channel that has been posting false information and videos about K-pop idols, including Jang Wonyoung, since 2021. As a result, the individual behind the channel is currently facing multiple lawsuits from several idols and agencies.
BTS members V and Jungkook, aespa, EXO’s Suho, and Kang Daniel are among those who have filed damages claims against the channel.
In a separate ruling, the Incheon District Court handed down a sentence of 2 years imprisonment and 3 years probation to the channel operator on January 15. She was ordered to pay a fine of 200 million won, for demeaning and insulting Jang Wonyoung and other K-pop idols.
The court slammed Sojang, saying she had repeatedly defamed celebrities and posted provocative content on YouTube for personal gain.
