Lee Jae wook and Shin Ye Eun are confirmed as the leads of the upcoming Genie TV drama Doctor Jonbeo (working title) on September 18. The series, directed by Lee Myung Woo and written by Kim Ji Soo, is based on the Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon series by Kim Tae Poong.

It follows Do Ji Ui, a public health doctor played by Lee Jae Wook, and Yuk Ha Ri, a nurse portrayed by Shin Ye Eun, as they navigate life and relationships in the remote island village of Pyeondongdo.

Lee Jae Wook takes on the role of Do Ji Ui, a doctor whose career begins as a promising plastic surgeon at a university hospital. His life changes when he is sent to Pyeondongdo, a place he once hoped to avoid due to past trauma connected to the island and sea. While trying to endure the situation, Do finds himself confronting challenges that test his growth as both a doctor and a person.

Lee, who has shown versatility in dramas such as Alchemy of Souls, Extraordinary You, Impossible Heir, and most recently Dear Hongrang, continues to expand his range with this medical romantic comedy.

He shared his thoughts about playing a doctor for the first time, saying, Since it’s my first time playing a doctor, I feel as much worry as I do excitement, but I will do my best to create a great project together with the excellent director, writer, and fellow actors.

As you wait for Doctor Jonbeo, Lee Jae Wook will star in a heartfelt romance, Last Summer, on November 1.

Opposite him, Shin Ye Eun takes on the role of Yuk Ha Ri, a nurse who moves from a university hospital to a public health center on the same island. She carries her own secrets, but her professional dedication and straightforward personality earn her trust from patients and locals.

The character is described as curious, hardworking, and quietly compassionate, though she becomes the subject of rumors within the community. Through her journey on the island, she begins to open her heart and forms an unexpected bond with Do Ji Ui.

Shin Ye Eun has previously starred in Revenge of Others, The Glory, and Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born. She is currently starring in A Hundred Memories with Kim Da Mi and will also lead Disney+’s The Murky Stream, scheduled to air on September 26.

Shin Ye Eun said, “I found the story set on an island where a single community lives together very intriguing. During the script reading, I was convinced, ‘This is truly an interesting drama!’ so I want to move forward with confidence and make it well.”

Doctor Johnbeo also draws interest for being the latest work of director Lee Myung Woo, whose past credits include The Fiery Priest and Boyhood. Writer Kim Ji Soo, recognized for nuanced scripts in previous works, joins the project.

Doctor Johnbeo, a Genie TV original drama, will premiere in 2026 on ENA and be available for free on KT Genie TV’s VOD service.
