Fans of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty — also known as The Tyrant’s Chef — have been waiting to hear whether the hugely popular 2025 drama will get a second season. And now, the people behind the series have given a real update: Season 2 is in the pipeline, but it cannot move forward until the next part of the original web novel is finished.

The drama is based on Surviving as Yeonsan-gun’s Chef by Park Kook Jae, and the production team has made it clear that they can’t start a new season without fresh source material. Park explained that the structure for the novel’s second season already exists.

The introduction, development, climax, and ending are all mapped out but many of the detailed plot points are still being written. Since the drama follows the novel closely, everyone involved agrees that they need the full written story before filming anything new.

The team isn’t thinking small, either. If Season 2 happens, the plan is to launch the novel, webtoon, and drama at the same time. So, all three versions begin Season 2 with the same storyline.

The creators also shared that a spinoff explaining how King Yi Heon ends up in the modern world is very likely to become the opening for the drama’s next season. That storyline already exists in the novel universe, so using it as Season 2’s starting point makes sense.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty became one of 2025’s biggest hits. The romance, the time-travel twist, the cooking, and the chemistry between YoonA and Lee Chae Min pulled in massive ratings and made the show a weekend favorite.

Many fans felt the ending, with Yeon Ji Yeong (YoonA) and King Yi Heon (Lee Chae Min) reunited in the modern era — opened the door to a much bigger story. Even YoonA has said she would “love to do it” if the drama returns.

Despite the excitement, there has been no official greenlight from the production team. Whether Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Season 2 happens ultimately depends on Studio Dragon and Netflix.

Both companies will look at the readiness of the new novel and whether fan demand remains strong. For now, the creators have confirmed that work on Season 2 is underway on the novel side.

When the drama aired, many viewers went back to read the source material — and discovered a more detailed, historical, and food-focused world than what appeared on TV. Park Kook Jae admits that the novel wasn’t a major hit while it was being serialized. He also revealed that he had always pictured the story as a drama while writing it.

Park praised YoonA and Lee Chae Min’s performances, saying YoonA captured Yeon Ji Yeong in a way that felt both convincing and true to the character. Plus, Lee Chae Min brought a sweeter interpretation of the king that worked beautifully for the drama.

As for his future work, Park is already planning projects with a different tone, though he knows many readers are most curious about Season 2 of Surviving as Yeonsangun’s Chef. He also said he has plenty more stories to tell within this world, whether or not the drama gets renewed.
