aespa is drawing heavy criticism online following their performance on Good Morning America on September 12 (local time). The group performed their new English single “Rich Man”, marking their third appearance on the show. They previously performed their hit songs “Girls” and “Better Things” in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Unlike previous stages, however, the performance was met with widespread disappointment across social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter).

Viewers described the stage as awkward and underwhelming, pointing out weak choreography, poor synchronization, and limited stage presence from aespa members Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning. Many also felt the lack of backup dancers made the performance look empty. On top of that, poor camera angles often focused on inactive members during solo parts.

Accusations of lip-syncing quickly followed, with fans noticing the backing track overpowering live vocals. While some suggested this could be due to technical issues, most agreed that the stage overall lacked polish.

aespa leader Karina faced particular criticism for her solo bridge. Without dancers or extra stage effects, her part came across as flat. Supporters, however, defended her, saying the problem was the staging rather than her performance. Some netizens argued the group should have adjusted their choreography for the U.S. audience.

The backlash has also led to comparisons with past K-pop appearances on Good Morning America, such as BTS’s highly praised 2018 “IDOL” stage. Many fans expressed disappointment with SM Entertainment, blaming the company’s poor planning and low production investment for the underwhelming performance during such an important U.S. promotion.

Despite the criticism, aespa is moving forward with their planned activities, including an Asian tour and upcoming appearances in the United States, such as The Jennifer Hudson Show. SM Entertainment has not yet issued a response regarding the negative feedback.

Meanwhile, aespa will resume their world tour, SYNK: aexis Line in Fukuoka on October 4-5, Tokyo on October 11-12, Aichi on October 18-19, and Tokyo on November 8-9.
