While it is too early to say anything about Jisoo’s performance in “Newtopia”, fans and critics are weighing in.
The BLACKPINK member is taking the lead in Coupang Play’s first zombie drama, “Newtopia,” and teasers have been coming out for some time now.
Dubbed as a zomcom, the show’s first trailer and special poster were revealed on January 7. The leading cast Jisoo and Park Jeong Min also held the production presentation for the drama that day.
The trailer for the drama on Prime Video is already nearing 2 million views in just a few days of release.
Since the streaming service dropped the trailer, Jisoo’s performance in “Newtopia” has received mixed feedback from viewers and critics. They noted that her facial expressions and pronunciation could be improved. Additionally, some critics felt that she struggled to fully immerse herself in the role, particularly during an emotional scene with Park Jeong Min.
They also pointed out the lack of chemistry between the leads. Meanwhile, Jisoo’s fans praise her performance and point out that the show’s zombie-comedy genre does not demand highly dramatic or immersive acting.
In online communities, netizens are criticizing her poor acting, with comments like “It’s my first time seeing weird acting from a trailer”, “Will Jisoo’s acting ever improve?”, and “Can you come back after taking acting classes for a bit?”. “Besides acting, can she fix her pronunciation and vocalization?” one critic wrote.
On the other hand, fans of the “Flower” singer are satisfied with her performance and looking forward to the release. Fans are urging critics to hold off on their reviews until the drama officially premieres, rather than making judgments based on a short, 1-minute preview clip.
“Newtopia” follows the thrilling adventure of soldier Jae Yoon (Park Jeong Min) and bear spirit Yong Joo (Jisoo) as they fight their way through zombie-infested Seoul to be reunited.
Newtopia” is set to make its highly anticipated debut on Coupang Play on February 7 at 8 PM.
