BTS RM Talks Marriage, Loneliness, Parenthood, and His SFMoMA Art Collaboration

RM of BTS at Bottega Veneta SS26 Show

Ever since the BTS members wrapped up their military service, fans have been overjoyed to see them back—going live at unexpected times and making long-awaited public appearances after months of silence.

In a recent livestream, BTS leader RM opened up about his personal thoughts on marriage, loneliness, and parenthood. His honest thoughts about these topics resonated deeply with fans worldwide.

At the same time, he is preparing for a major art collaboration, “RM x SFMoMA,” a curatorial project that will debut in San Francisco in October 2026.

RM’s Honest Thoughts on Marriage and Life

On October 5, RM went live on Weverse, where he spoke candidly about the social pressures people face around marriage and family. The 31-year-old rapper reflected on how modern society, particularly in Korea, often places unfair expectations on individuals — especially women — when it comes to marriage and children. He said, “I just wish everyone could live according to their own pace,” adding that there’s no single “correct answer” for how to live your life.

He also questioned the idea that marriage automatically solves emotional struggles. “If someone can’t handle being alone, then even if they get married, will that really fix things?” RM asked. His words suggested that true happiness begins with self-understanding and learning to be comfortable in solitude before committing to someone else.

The “Wild Flower” rapper expressed that he might not get married at all, “Seeing my parents, I naturally thought I would get married, but I am already 32 now,” and added, “If I get married too soon, you all might feel sad, at this rate, I most probably end up not getting married at all.”

When the topic of parenthood came up, RM was open about his doubts. He admitted with a laugh that he “can barely handle raising” himself, recalling that he had been a mischievous child. He wondered aloud how he would manage a child like him, saying that raising a new life “isn’t something that goes the way you want.”

RM noted that people born in the 1990s, like himself, are part of a generation that views marriage not as an obligation but as a personal choice.

RM x SFMoMA

Beyond his philosophical reflections, RM is also channeling his lifelong passion for art into a major international project. In October 2026, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) will host “RM x SFMoMA,” a special exhibition co-curated by RM himself.

The show, which will run until February 2027, is described as a dialogue between East and West — bringing together roughly 200 artworks from RM’s personal collection and SFMoMA’s archives. The exhibition is designed to serve as what RM calls a “small but sturdy bridge” between cultures and generations.

Visitors will see works by some of Korea’s most celebrated modern artists, including Yun Hyong Keun and Kim Yun Shin, alongside pieces by renowned Western figures like Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

He shared his thoughts about his partnership with SFMoMA, “We have been preparing for about a year, and it looks like we will spend another year finalizing the layout and getting everything ready.”

RM also revealed that a global tour is in the works too, “Maybe after San Francisco, there’s a possibility it could tour other museums, but we will need to have discussions with them first. For now, we are just focusing on San Francisco.”

He further said, “We are considering expanding it to other institutions, but this is where things stand for the moment.”

Meanwhile, RM is juggling solo activities with group endeavors after completing military service on June 10. All BTS members are working on their group comeback and world tour, an announcement will likely be made by the end of the year.
