IU and Byeon Woo Seok to finally begin filming for their highly-anticipated romance drama, reportedly premiering by year-end.
It was first confirmed in December 2024 that IU and Byeon Woo Seok will lead the romance drama ‘Wife of a 21st Century Prince’. However, details about the filming schedule, creative team, and supporting cast were not revealed at the time. The drama’s casting news created a huge buzz online last year.
Set in modern-day Korea with a fictional constitutional monarchy, ‘Wife of a 21st Century Prince’ tells the story of Sung Hee Joo, a commoner from a wealthy family, and Prince Yian, who is deprived of many privileges despite his royal lineage.
Writer Yoo Ah In makes her debut with ‘Wife of a 21st Century Prince’, a project that earned her an Excellence Award for Long-form Series at the 2022 MBC Drama Script Contest. Director Park Joon Hwa is on board to supervise direction. His notable works include “Alchemy of Souls”, ‘Because This is My First Life’ and ‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim’, and more.
He replaced a director initially selected by the production team. The show’s creators carefully considered numerous directorial choices, even delaying their final decision to ensure they found the perfect person to lead the drama’s cast. Park Joon Hwa was ultimately chosen as director in February.
Production for ‘Wife of a 21st Century Prince’ is set to kick off later this month, with a planned broadcast in the second half of the year. The drama will premiere on MBC and take over the time slot of “The Moon Flows Over River”, scheduled for broadcast in October.
In response to the high level of interest due to the global popularity of IU and Byeon Woo Seok, there’s also a push for a simultaneous release on Disney+.
Previously, there were reports that Byeon Woo Seok and IU had stepped down as leads due to creative differences. However, their agencies VARO Entertainment and EDAM Entertainment denied reports of their withdrawal from the project.
In the latest development, Noh Sang Hyun and Gong Seung Yeon are approached to join the lead cast in this drama.
Anticipation is high for “Wife of a 21st Century Prince” as leads Byeon Woo Seok and IU are fresh off the success of their recent hits, “Lovely Runner” and “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” respectively.
