At the age of 71, Jackie Chan makes a fierce comeback in The Shadow’s Edge, a crime-action film directed by Larry Yang (Ride On). Set against the neon-lit yet shadowy streets of Macau, the film stars many established and rising Asian stars, including Tony Leung Ka Fai, Zhang Zifeng, SEVENTEEN’s Jun, Ci Sha, and more.

After its premiere at Cannes 2025 in May and the Shanghai International Film Festival in June, the film is ready to hit cinemas in China in mid-August. The high-octane crime thriller reinterprets the 2007 Hong Kong crime classic Eye in the Sky, and the cast refreshes the classic with a fresh energy.

More importantly, The Shadow’s Edge reunites Jackie Chan with acclaimed actor Tony Leung Ka Fai after nearly 20 years. They previously shared the screen in The Myth in 2005.

As the film begins rollout next week, here’s everything you need to know about the cast, plot, trailer, and release date.

The Shadow’s Edge Release Date

The Shadow’s Edge, led by Jackie Chan, will be released in different countries over several weeks, beginning in mid-August. The film will premiere in China, Singapore, and Malaysia on August 16, followed by its release in Indonesia on August 20.

Audiences in Australia, North America, and New Zealand can catch the film in theaters beginning August 28. It will then arrive in Thailand on September 11 and is scheduled to open in South Korea in September.

No confirmed streaming date, but the film is expected to arrive on iQIYI (as the producer) and potentially other global platforms following its theatrical run.

Plot Overview: Jackie Chan vs. Tony Leung Ka Fai in a High-Tech Crime War

The film follows two former allies who now stand on opposite sides of the law. It centers on Wong Tak Chung (Jackie Chan), a former Macau Police surveillance officer, who is called out of retirement to dismantle a highly skilled criminal network.

This tech-savvy operation, spearheaded by Fu Longsheng (Tony Leung Ka Fai), leverages modern tools such as drones, AI, and hacking to execute high-profile heists while evading law enforcement. Wong trains a rookie detective team in traditional surveillance methods to outsmart criminals using AI-driven evasion tactics. He also partners with resourceful young cyber-analyst to track the criminal masterminds.

Cast and Characters

  • Jackie Chan as Won Tak Chung – A former surveillance master summoned for one last mission. Unlike Chan’s recent lighthearted roles, The Shadow’s Edge leans into a darker tone.
  • Tony Leung Ka Fai as Fu Longsheng – Criminal mastermind and Chan’s longtime adversary
  • Zhang Zifeng as He Qiuguo – Cyber-analyst and daughter of Wong’s late partner
  • Wen Junhui (Jun) as Hu Feng – SEVENTEEN member as Leung’s adoptive son and tech-savvy thief
  • Ci Sha – Martial artist playing Leung’s other adoptive son
  • Zhenwei Wang – The Karate Kid alum in a supporting police role.

The Shadow’s Edge Trailer

The official trailer (released June 2025) and multiple promotional teasers offer a glimpse into the film’s intensity. The teasers hint at a tougher, more shadowy version of Jackie Chan than audiences typically see. It shows him in intense close-combat fights and calculated face-offs against Tony Leung’s chilling villain. The action is layered with a high-tech edge, featuring drones and hacking sequences.

YouTube video

The Shadow’s Edge could mark a defining chapter in Jackie Chan’s career, proving that at 71, he remains a master of action cinema.

Circle August 16, 2025, on your calendar, this is one action spectacle you won’t want to miss.
