Good news for “RuJinu” shippers as it seems Rumi and Jinu’s love story will continue in KPop Demon Hunters 2. The Netflix animated film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, has become a global hit, with talks of turning it into a full franchise.
At the heart of the story is the complex relationship between Rumi, a member of the girl group HUNTR/X, and Jinu, the SAJA Boys leader.
In the film, Rumi and her bandmates lead double lives as K-pop idols and demon hunters. Their world is turned upside down when they encounter the SAJA Boys, a boy band with a dark secret; they are demons in disguise.
In the film’s climax, Jinu sacrifices himself to save Rumi and humanity from the villain Gwi Ma. This emotional moment is intensified by the absence of a romantic resolution between the two, as they never share a kiss.
This left the audience, and particularly Jungkook of BTS, frustrated. The self-sacrifice of Jinu brought the BTS member to tears and he expressed his emotions candidly, saying, “You idiot,” as he watched Jinu take the fatal blow. He continued, “Why did he block that? What the heck? Just fight with her.”
Well, there is no need to be sad over the film’s climax, as KPop Demon Hunters director, Maggie Kang, has hinted at Jinu’s return in the sequel. In an interview in Seoul, director Kang was asked if Jinu is “truly dead,” to which she replied
You could think that way, but we don’t know. And don’t Korean audiences tend to like tragedies?
She did not provide many details about the sequel as it is too early to tell. However, Maggie’s meaningful remarks hint that Jinu may return in the KPop Demon Hunters sequel. Actor Ahn Hyo Seop, who voiced Jinu, has also expressed interest in returning for a sequel.
If the sequels are finalized, Maggie Kang plans to present more Korean music genres to the world, especially trot. In addition, she revealed sharing the history of the HUNTR/X girls, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, in the sequels.
What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstories? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?
Meanwhile, KPop Demon Hunters continues with special sing-along events in theaters across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand on August 23-24. In South Korea, the Busan International Film Festival will host the film’s first domestic sing-along screening at Dongseo University’s Sohyang Theater.
