Kim Soo Hyun’s iconic drama My Love From the Star will now air in South America, 12 years after its release. Had this news broken at a different time, Kdrama fans would have been thrilled. However, the actor’s current controversy has stalled his career. His endorsements and projects are being canceled and postponed left and right. His past relationship with Kim Sae Ron is being severely criticized after her death on February 16, his 37th birthday.
Kim Soo Hyun’s ‘My Love from The Star’ to Air in Brazil
Coming back to the subject matter, Brazilian viewers will soon be able to enjoy Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun’s iconic performances in My Love from the Star. The drama will begin airing on SBT, Brazil’s biggest private broadcaster, on June 9 (local time). This broadcast marks the first time the show will be available in South America, twelve years after its Korean debut in 2013.
SBT explained the reason for airing My Love from the Star, over a decade after its release
It gained international popularity and was successful in many countries.
Korean dramas are no longer just niche content, they’ve become part of major TV programming. SBT is keeping up with trends from social media and streaming platforms to meet the needs of open TV viewers.
SBT
In light of the quick rise in popularity of Korean pop culture content in Brazil, SBT has developed a special programming segment known as ‘Asian Production Line.’
My Love from the Star (2013–2014) remains one of the most iconic K-dramas that catapulted Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun’s acting careers. The series follows Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun), an alien stranded on Earth for 400 years, who falls in love with Cheon Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun), a brash but endearing Hallyu star.
Min Joon possesses superhuman abilities and plans to return to his planet, but gets entangled with his new neighbor, Song Yi, who resembles a woman he saved in the Joseon era.
The drama broke ratings records (peaking at 28.1% nationwide) and sparked trends in fashion, makeup, and even fried chicken consumption. It also earned Kim Soo Hyun the Baeksang Arts Award for Most Popular Actor.

Kim Soo Hyun’s Controversy Surrounding Late Actress Kim Sae Ron
While My Love from the Star solidified Kim’s A-list status back then, he now faces challenges due to allegations involving the late actress Kim Sae Ron.
Sae Ron’s family accused the Queen of Tears actor of dating her when she was underage, specifically 15, while he was 27, supported by KakaoTalk messages. Kim admitted to a relationship but clarified it occurred between 2019 and 2020 when Sae Ron was 19, the legal age of adulthood in South Korea.
Sae-ron’s family also claimed Kim’s agency, Gold Medalist, pressured her to repay ₩700 million (approximately $515K) related to a 2022 DUI incident.
During a press conference in March, Kim Soo Hyun tearfully denied these accusations, saying, I cannot admit to what I didn’t do.
The fallout included losing brand deals with Prada, Dinto Cosmetics, and others, along with Disney+ postponing his series Knock Off. In response, Kim filed ₩12 billion (approximately $8.8M) defamation lawsuits against the bereaved family and the YouTube channel HoverLab.
Meanwhile, My Love from the Star starring Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun will air on SBT on June 9 at 4:45 pm (local time). Taiwan is also set to rebroadcast My Love from the Star on a Korean Wave channel.
