tvN’s Jeong Nyeon: The Star is Born is facing an unexpected delay!
On September 12, tvN announced that the highly-anticipated drama Jeong Nyeon: The Star is Born starring Kim Tae Ri, Shin Ye Eun, Jung Eun Chae, and Ra Mi Ran has been put on hold.
MBC has obtained a court order against the production companies behind the upcoming tvN drama.
On September 10, the Seoul District Court granted MBC’s request to seize assets from Studio N, NPO Entertainment, and Management MMM, citing violations of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act.
Specifically, the court found that the production companies had illegally taken credit for MBC’s work and breached contract negotiations unfairly, resulting in financial losses for MBC.
Jeong Nyeon was a drama project developed by MBC, Studio N, and others over a year, with MBC’s PD Jung Ji In set to direct. However, disagreements arose due to production cost issues.
The production companies ultimately chose to partner with Studio Dragon, a CJ ENM affiliate, which offered a higher production budget of around 2 billion won. As a result, the show was moved from MBC to tvN.
MBC invested heavily in pre-production for the drama, but the project was halted when the broadcast plans fell through. As a result, PD Jung Ji In and key staff members left MBC.
Jeong Nyeon: The Star is Born is a period drama based on a popular webtoon, set in the 1950s. It follows Jeong Nyeon, a gifted actor played by Kim Tae Ri, as she competes to become the best national theater actor.
