Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters is making headlines around the world, both for its record-breaking viewership and its chart-topping soundtrack. As of August 6, the film has reached 158.8 million views, making it the 4th most-watched English-language movie in Netflix history.
That puts it ahead of The Adam Project and just behind Don’t Look Up, which has 171.4 million views. If the current pace continues, KPop Demon Hunters could soon climb even higher.
Strong Viewership Weeks After Release
What’s surprising is how the film continues to gain traction. Released on June 20, the streaming numbers were modest in the first five weeks, but it then picked up pace in the sixth week.
Most Netflix releases peak in their first two weeks, but this one is still growing in its seventh week, adding 26.3 million views from July 28 to August 3 alone. It remains No. 2 on Netflix’s weekly English-language movie chart.
The current top three all-time films are:
- Red Notice – 230.9 million views
- Carry On – 172.1 million views
- Don’t Look Up – 171.4 million views
Described as Netflix’s Frozen, KPop Demon Hunters is quickly closing the gap on these blockbusters.
8 Songs From KPop Demon Hunters Soundtrack Charts on Billboard
The movie’s impact isn’t just on Netflix, it’s on the music charts, too. Its soundtrack features eight songs that entered the Billboard Hot 100.
The fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X’s main track, “Golden,” is holding steady at No. 2 for a second week. It started at No. 81 and climbed steadily through the rankings. It is projected to debut at No.1 on the latest Billboard HOT 100 chart.
Other songs charting include:
- “Your Idol” by SAJA Boys – No. 9
- “Soda Pop” by SAJA Boys – No. 16
- “How It’s Done” by HUNTR/X – No. 19
- “Free” by Rumi & Jinu – No. 28
- “What It Sounds Like” – No. 29
- “Takedown” (HUNTR/X ver.) – No. 33
- “Takedown” (TWICE ver.) – No. 67
The full soundtrack album is now at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. In addition, these catchy songs are ranking high on Billboard 200 Global and US, UK Singles charts, and Global Spotify.
The film follows HUNTR/X, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, a girl group by day and exorcists by night. They battle SAJA Boys, an evil boy group inspired by grim reapers. Set in Seoul, it features iconic locations like Namsan Tower and dishes like kimbap and ramen. It also sparked a viral trend with the “Kimbap Mukbang Challenge.”
Though set in Korea and featuring voice actors Ahn Hyo Seop and Lee Byung Hun, along with a largely Korean-American cast and crew, the film is not classified as a Korean production. Co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, it is a Netflix U.S. original.
The Wrap reports say Netflix is already considering a sequel, live-action remake, and musical adaptation. While it is reported that KPop Demon Hunters 2 and 3 are on the way, Netflix has yet to confirm future plans.
