Leeteuk of Super Junior Admits He is “Most Scared of Koreans”

Leeteuk from Super Junior

Super Junior’s Leeteuk recently confessed that he is scared of performing in front of Korean audiences. As a K-pop idol with years of experience under his belt, it is unexpected he feels apprehensive about holding events in his home country.

The 41-year-old K-pop idol recently revealed,” I want to have a fan meeting in Korea again but there is something like that. I keep looking at Japan or overseas, the reason I want to do it (overseas) is because the Korean market has been scary for me since the old days. I think it’s a bit scary, a little scary.”

Leeteuk continued, “So (if) I am by myself, (let’s say), I released a solo song then, going on a music show alone itself, it feels a little reluctant. I am worried if I go out like this, people in Korea will swear at me. Personally, I am most scared of Koreans.”

He added, “So rather than focusing on performances (in Korea), it’s Japan or something, in other Asian countries.”

The Super Junior member revealed that he is more comfortable holding concerts overseas than in Korea. Leeteuk also clarified that he does not hate Korea or Koreans because he, himself, is Korean. However, it is just that South Korea is a “little uncomfortable” for him.

He revealed the reason for hosting events overseas, saying, “It’s that kind of feeling where you want to go where people applaud.”

In Korea, idols are held to high standards and face intense scrutiny. Fans are passionate and dedicated, but can also be bluntly honest with their criticism. Idols are expected to conform to traditional values and have a picture-perfect image.

Leeteuk previously seemingly showed his support for Seunghan of RIIZE, who was removed from the team after protests from Korean fans. He retweeted a tweet showing support for Seunghan.

Moreover, he received massive backlash in May for speaking in favor of a former Super Junior member. During a speech at Ryeowook’s wedding, Leeteuk asked everyone to forgive Kangin who retired from the entertainment industry after a series of crimes including a drunk driving incident.
