The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA AWARDS), K-pop’s most prestigious annual ceremony, has announced a significant change to its judging method. The updated system aims to enhance the evaluation process for the 25th edition of the awards.
On October 10, CJ ENM announced the changes in evaluation criteria, sharing, “Through the 2024 MAMA AWARDS, we will shed light on the achievements of artists and industry professionals who have shown remarkable performances through relentless challenges and passion.”
They explained changes to the evaluation process, “To achieve this, we are revising the evaluation method. For the ‘Album of the Year’ award, the assessment will no longer be limited to sales figures alone. Instead, it will comprehensively evaluate factors such as production quality, music, artwork, visual elements, and influence.”
A new category has been announced for the 2024 MAMA Awards: “Furthermore, to recognize K-pop performance capabilities and importance, we are introducing a new category, ‘Best Choreography,’ which will honor impressive K-pop dance routines and acknowledge the artistic contributions of both artists and choreographers.”
The 2024 MAMA AWARDS concept is “BIG BLUR: What is Real?”, blending music, tastes, and cultures to create something entirely new.
The 2024 MAMA AWARDS nominees will be revealed on October 14th at 6 p.m. KST through a nomination broadcast on Mnet, YouTube (Mnet K-POP), and Mnet TV. This year’s ceremony, sponsored by Visa, will be held in the US (LA’s Dolby Theater, Nov 21) and Japan (Kyocera Dome Osaka, Nov 22-23), with global live broadcasting.
