Sasaengs (overzealous fans) have been fined for impersonating a delivery person and stealing the personal information of several high-profile idols. The victims include one member of EXO and three members of NCT.
On July 11, SM Entertainment announced the outcome of a lawsuit related to the theft of personal information of one EXO member and three NCT members.
The agency revealed that they collected a lot of evidence, with the help of fan reports and internal monitoring, about an event in April 2023. During an X live broadcast, someone pretended to be a delivery person and stole the artists’ personal information.
SM Entertainment appointed Sejong Law Firm as their legal representative and filed a complaint under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.
They revealed that the defendants in the case admitted to impersonating delivery men during a live broadcast, stealing the artists’ personal information, and sharing it publicly.
The police identified four suspects and indicted two of them. The defendants claimed their actions were motivated by their fandom and sought leniency. However, they were each fined 3 million won.
Lastly, SM Entertainment recently stated that they are actively pursuing legal action against individuals who violate their artists’ rights and privacy.
They are currently involved in multiple lawsuits and emphasize the importance of respecting their artists’ boundaries and privacy. Any harmful actions will be met with immediate legal consequences.
