Popular K-pop groups including SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TXT, and NewJeans dominated the 2023 Global Artist Chart by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
According to the Global Artist Chart 2023 by IFPI, SEVENTEEN snagged the second spot, right after Taylor Swift. They’re the highest-ranking K-pop artists on the chart and have been in the top 10 for three consecutive years.
IFPI, with over 8,000 record labels worldwide as members, releases an annual list of music industry trends. One of the most important indicators on this list is the Global Artist Chart, which ranks artists based on a combination of physical album sales, digital music downloads, and audio and video streaming numbers.
SEVENTEEN
SEVENTEEN made their debut in the top 10 of the chart back in 2021 (at 9th place), they’ve been steadily climbing higher and higher. After reaching 6th place in 2022, they’ve now skyrocketed 4 spots to an incredible 2nd place. They’ve even surpassed global pop icons like Morgan Wallen, Bad Bunny, and Eminem, who are all super talented in their own right.
They’ve become the ultimate K-pop group, selling over 16 million albums last year. They’ve even surpassed their own record with their 10th mini album FML and 11th mini album SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN.
Their unique storytelling and unwavering energy in even the toughest situations just keep getting stronger with each album. Plus, their self-produced bops like Super and God of Music perfectly capture their growth and have made them a global sensation.
Stray Kids
Stray Kids has made a big leap on the chart. They climbed all the way to 3rd place, which is their highest ranking yet. It’s impressive to see how they’ve progressed from entering the chart in 7th place in 2022 to reaching the top 3 in just a year.
With their last album ROCK-STAR, Stray Kids not only topped the Billboard 200 chart but also made their HOT 100 debut with LALALALA.
Stray Kids is proving their global popularity by winning major international awards. They snagged the Group of the Year award at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards and were nominated in two categories at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards, for K-Pop Artist of the Year and K-Pop Song of the Year.
TXT
TXT secured the 7th spot on the prestigious Global Artist Chart of 2023. They released two albums last year, The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION and The Name Chapter: FREEFALL. Both albums landed No.1 on the Billboard Top Album chart. In addition, TXT’s The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION sold over 2 million copies on Hanteo in the first week.
On the other hand, their second album of 2023, The Name Chapter: FREEFALL surpassed 2.4 million copies in the first week in Korea. Moreover, the group was awarded at the VMAs and secured nominations at multiple international award ceremonies.
NewJeans
NewJeans made a splash on the Global Artist Chart 2023 by securing the 8th spot. This is a huge accomplishment, especially for K-pop female artists. They have the second-highest ranking among all female artists, just behind the incredible Taylor Swift who claimed the top spot.
NewJeans debuted on the Global Artist Chart and went straight into the top 10, which is incredible. Their songs like Ditto, OMG, Super Shy, and ETA were huge hits both domestically and internationally. They even had five songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and two songs in the top 100 of the UK’s Official Singles Chart. The total number of streams for all of NewJeans’ songs on Spotify has reached a whopping 3.7 billion times.
Lastly, Apart from SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TXT, and NewJeans, other talented K-pop groups are making their mark on IFPI’s Global Artist Chart of 2023. IVE has secured the 12th spot and NCT DREAM is holding strong at the 15th.
