Joshua Hong of SEVENTEEN is stepping into a new chapter of his career as he begins preparing for acting projects with guidance from United Talent Agency (UTA).
The announcement was made at the ongoing 2025 Busan International Film Festival. There, UTA detailed its plans to expand its presence in Asia and support artists looking to cross over into different industries.
David Park, a senior partner at UTA, confirmed that the agency is working closely with Joshua as he explores acting opportunities. Best known as one of SEVENTEEN’s main vocalists, the Korean-American singer has built a strong international following thanks to his smooth vocals, stage presence, and charm.
Now, with the global demand for Korean actors at an all-time high, he is aiming to bring those qualities to the screen.
UTA has positioned itself as a bridge between Hollywood and Asia by representing talents in film, television, and music. Park emphasized that K-pop artists like Joshua fit perfectly into this multi-medium model.
He noted that K-pop idols often succeed in acting because of their ability to adapt and their relentless work ethic, saying, “They will themselves to learn new talents,” and added, “I have never seen that level of commitment from other human artists.”
This won’t be Joshua’s first time acting. In 2019, he made a cameo in the popular web drama A-Teen 2, appearing briefly in Episode 7 as a friend of the character Ryu Joo Ha. Though it was a small role, it gave him his first on-screen experience and a glimpse of acting beyond music.
The 29-year-old idol has also spoken openly about his long-term acting ambitions. In a 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he revealed his interest in pursuing roles in Hollywood, “I don’t know what my other dreams are in the future, but maybe I will go back to the U.S. and try auditioning or learn acting,” he said, citing films like Everything Everywhere All at Once as inspiration.
Korean entertainment continues to dominate worldwide, with films such as KPop Demon Hunters and series like Squid Game setting records. In this landscape, idols moving into acting are drawing more attention than ever, and Joshua is seen as one of the next promising names to watch.
While specific projects have not yet been revealed, discussions are underway to secure Joshua’s first role. Possibilities include Korean dramas, streaming series, or even international productions.
Joshua’s journey into acting will run alongside SEVENTEEN’s ongoing activities. For the next few years, members will pursue solo activities more as the group has stepped into their military enlistment era. Four members have already enlisted, however, Joshua, being a US citizen, is not required to enlist.
As the full-group reunion is expected in 2028-2029, Joshua will explore acting endeavors and other solo projects.
Meanwhile, SEVENTEEN kicked off their world tour, New_, this month and will perform in Hong Kong on September 27-28.
