After watching the finale of Squid Game Season 3, some fans held onto a glimmer of hope that the beloved series might somehow come back. It’s not uncommon for hugely popular shows like this to spawn spin-offs, sequels, or reboots. With an ending that left several questions hanging, many viewers wondered if the creators might reconsider and continue the story after all.

As with Season 2, Squid Game Season 3 drew mixed reviews from critics but enjoyed plenty of support and praise from fans. Released on June 27, it reached #1 in 93 countries and has maintained the top spot in the global TV show category for two days in a row.

Season 3 closes the chapter on the Korean Squid Game and its main character, Seong Gi Hun, also known as Player 456 (Lee Jung Jae). Although creator Hwang Dong Hyuk has finished the story he started in 2021, it’s clear Netflix may not be done with the franchise. The final moments of Season 3 leave the door open for possible spin-offs or new storylines in the future.

However, in a recent interview, director Hwang Dong Hyuk put an end to any hopes for Squid Game Season 4, Squid Game USA, or an American spin-off.

In an interview with My Daily, Hwang shared that Squid Game ends with Gi Hun’s death and there are no plans for a new season.

Squid Game has been telling its story through the journey of one person. With Seong Gi Hun’s death, there is no possibility for Squid Game to continue.

However, some fans believed Cate Blanchett’s cameo at the end of Squid Game Season 3 was a hint at a possible American spin-off. Many were even expecting a brutal Squid Game America to follow.

Director Hwang responded to the rumors, saying:

In fact, I once thought of an ending where Seong Gi Hun survives and goes to America and witnesses another recruitment process. If that had happened, it could have continued, and there was room for that possibility.

But when the ending was finalized with Seong Gi Hun’s death, it did not carry that meaning. It ended with the idea that, through one person’s effort, it concluded in Korea, but the system itself remains strong and does not easily disappear. It was not meant to produce or connect to an American version.

Additionally, some foreign media outlets had previously claimed that Squid Game USA would be filmed in LA starting in December, directed by David Fincher and starring Cate Blanchett. There were also rumors that Hwang Dong Hyuk would be involved, but the director has denied all of these reports.

He revealed that he has not been approached for the American version. Hwang is a fan of David Fincher and would ‘consider’ working with him if rumors are true and he gets an offer.

Regarding the Frontman spin-off, he shared

I don’t have any concrete plans yet. If I were to do a spin-off, I’d like to set aside the pressure of delivering a message and just try telling a fun story for the fans. It’s too vague for me to say right now whether I will do it or not. If the opportunity comes up someday, I think I might give it a try.

Meanwhile, Squid Game Season 3 is currently available on Netflix to stream.
