The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie is officially happening. The film will continue and conclude the story from the hit Prime Video series and Jenny Han’s bestselling book trilogy. Announced on September 17, 2025, just hours after the Season 3 finale, the movie will serve as the final chapter in Belly Conklin’s journey.
Creator Jenny Han confirmed that “only a movie” could give Belly’s story a proper ending. Its final season was a global success and reached more than 70 million viewers worldwide. The movie will offer a complete, emotional wrap-up to the love story that began at Cousins Beach.
The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie Announcement and Background
The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie was formally announced by Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios during the show’s finale celebration event in Paris. At the event, a cinema marquee revealed the movie’s title and confirmed that the story would continue after the series.
Jenny Han, who wrote the original novels and created the series, will write and direct the film. She will be joined by Sarah Kucserka, who co-showran the show. Han said in a press release, “There’s another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due.”
The movie will act as the official conclusion to both the TV series and the book trilogy, rather than another season.
Plot and Story Direction
The full plot hasn’t been revealed yet, but Jenny Han has teased that the movie will focus on “one major milestone left in Belly’s journey.” That line points to the wedding storyline from the final novel, We’ll Always Have Summer, which wasn’t shown in the series finale.
In the last episode of the series, Belly and Conrad found their way back to each other in Paris before returning to Cousins Beach. However, the finale didn’t fast-forward to their adult lives. Han has confirmed that the movie will take place some time after those events.
In an interview with Elle UK, Jenny Han shared that she is still in the “script stages.” She added, “I’m still in the script stages. The show ends as they are just finding their way back to each other, so the movie will offer a look at the two of them together.”
In addition, she told Variety she is glad to have “that extra time” for the movie because she wanted to show Belly “as this young woman.”
The movie will also revisit other storylines, including Jeremiah’s growth, and the futures of Steven, Taylor, and Laurel, who moved to San Francisco.

Cast and Characters
The official cast list for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie has not been released, but the main trio is expected to return:
- Lola Tung as Isabel “Belly” Conklin
- Christopher Briney as Conrad Fisher
- Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah Fisher
The three actors were seen together in promotional photos tied to the movie’s announcement.
Other regular cast members — Sean Kaufman (Steven), Rain Spencer (Taylor), and Jackie Chung (Laurel) — are also expected to come back to finish their stories.
The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie Release Date and Production Status
As of now, there is no confirmed The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie release date. Jenny Han has said multiple times that the film will not be released in 2026, since it’s still in the early stages of production.
“It’s still a little too soon to say,” Han said in an interview with TODAY on September 18. She added, “But Sarah Kucserka, who is my co-showrunner, and I have finished a draft, so we are trudging along.”
Jenny Han said it will not come out “next year” (meaning 2026) and that the project is still being made. Some industry speculation suggests a release as early as 2027, but nothing is official.
Filming hasn’t started yet, which means fans should expect a late 2027 or early 2028 release. Han also shared that she wanted more time to let the cast grow up a bit, saying she is happy to have that “breathing space” before the story continues.
Han also confirmed to Variety that the movie’s timeline is set in the future, saying, “No, I can’t say how far ahead it is, but it is ahead.”
Since Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios are behind the project, it is very likely that The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie will stream on Prime Video. Han has said they will decide later if it will premiere in theaters or go straight to streaming.
