Fans were worried if BTS SUGA’s drunk driving incident would affect his military service in any way, or result in an extension.
On August 7, the Like That rapper was charged with drunk driving during his mandatory military service. However, fans have nothing to worry about as he will not face any additional penalties or disciplinary action beyond the standard legal consequences.
The Military Manpower Administration official confirmed that SUGA will not face any additional punishment, including an extension of his social service period, for his drunk driving offense.
The official explained that social service agents are only held accountable for actions during work hours and are treated like ordinary citizens outside of work, so the BTS rapper will not receive special treatment or penalties.
On the night of August 6, SUGA was stopped by police after falling in front of his home, and a breathalyzer test revealed he was intoxicated. He had been driving an electric kickboard while drunk and was subsequently fined and had his license revoked.
The police initially approached him to offer assistance, but they conducted a test upon detecting the smell of alcohol.
SUGA issued a heartfelt apology saying he’s deeply sorry to have let everyone down with this disappointing incident. He acknowledged that although no one was hurt and no property was damaged, he takes full responsibility for his actions.
He enlisted in the military as a public service worker in September 2023 and is scheduled to be discharged in June 2025.
