The popular Japanese manga “1122: For A Happy Marriage” is being brought to life as a Korean drama.
Big Ocean E&M and T2N Media, two major players in the entertainment industry, have joined forces to adapt the best-selling Japanese manga “1122: For A Happy Marriage” into a drama series.
The companies have successfully secured the rights to the manga, created by Peko Watanabe, through a contract with Kodansha Publishing, the copyright holder. With the agreement now in place, Big Ocean E&M and T2N Media are set to begin full-scale production on the drama.
The manga was initially serialized in Kodansha’s “Monthly Morning TWO” magazine for 2 years. During this time, it achieved impressive sales with over 2.1 million copies circulated.
It was adapted into a Japanese drama, which premiered as an Amazon Prime original series on the global OTT platform in the summer of 2024.
Okada Masao and Takahata Mitsuki, the on-screen couple from the drama, took their fictional romance to real life and announced their actual marriage after the show ended.
“1122: For A Happy Marriage” has gained international attention for their unique and thought-provoking portrayal of marriage.
Interestingly, the drama’s director and scriptwriter, Rikiya Imaizumi and Kaori Imaizumi, are a married couple in real life.
The K-drama “1122: For A Happy Marriage” offers a nuanced look at married life in Korea. The story centers around a couple who, seven years into their marriage, decide to try an unconventional approach: a “permit system”. It allows them to pursue relationships outside of their marriage.
Director Yoo Jung Joon, known for directing “Love ft. Marriage & Divorce”, will be at the helm. He is joined by PD Kim Tae Hyung, who previously directed the Japanese-Korean drama “What Comes After Love” starring Lee Se Young and Kentaro Sakaguchi.
The K-drama version of “1122: For A Happy Marriage” will feature 12 episodes, adding 5 more to the original Japanese series, which had 7 episodes.
