Choo Young Woo is facing heavy criticism after being spotted with a phone case that many netizens have labeled “problematic.” The incident occurred when he attended a Tom Ford event, where fans noticed his phone case bore the image of a high school girl character standing in front of an adult shop.
The case also featured the name “LOVE MERCI,” which is a real adult store located in Akihabara, Japan.
Netizens quickly pointed out that the illustrator responsible for the design is known for repeatedly drawing underage characters in revealing outfits and provocative poses. This has fueled accusations that Choo Young Woo’s choice of accessory indirectly supports the sexualization of minors.
The issue has sparked heavy criticism online, though some argue it is unreasonable to brand him a “pedophile” solely over a phone case.
In South Korea, even minor controversies can bring serious fallout, and if the backlash does not subside, it could jeopardize his future projects. A similar case occurred with Park Sung Hoon, who had to step down from his role in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty after he drew outrage by sharing an adult video on Instagram.
The issue gained traction because it adds to a series of past controversies involving Choo Young Woo. He previously made headlines for following around 30 adult BJs (broadcast jockeys) on Instagram, briefly unfollowing them, but then following again. He also faced criticism for following a rapper with a history of violence, drunk driving, and harassment charges.
Choo Young Woo was further accused of being dismissive of his breakthrough role in a BL (Boys’ Love) drama by deliberately avoiding mention of it during an award acceptance speech.
Cameras have also caught him staring at veteran actress Jeon Do Yeon in a way some viewers considered disrespectful. In addition, he has been rumored to frequent nightclubs, a claim that has resurfaced alongside his new scandal.
Korean netizens reacted strongly, leaving sharp comments across online forums, such as, “So this is what he’s really like?” Others pushed back, arguing, “It’s only a phone case,” and emphasizing that accusing someone of being a pedophile is too serious to base on that alone.
On the work front, Choo Young Woo recently starred in Head Over Heels, and has a movie, Even If Love Disappears From the World Tonight, in the pipeline.
