The hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters is getting a sequel, which is not a surprise, given the film’s popularity. Netflix and Sony have reportedly finalized a deal to produce KPop Demon Hunters 2, which is currently targeting a 2029 release.
According to reports from Variety, Bloomberg, and other media outlets, production for the sequel is now in progress. Since high-quality animated films require long development periods, the four-year gap between the first movie and the next one is expected.
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who led the original film, are in “advanced talks” to return for the sequel. However, Netflix and Sony have not yet shared details about the release format. For instance, whether it will also have a limited theatrical run like the first movie’s sing-along edition.
The decision to continue the story follows the massive global success of KPop Demon Hunters. Released in June, the movie became Netflix’s most-watched original film ever, surpassing 325 million views worldwide. It remained in Netflix’s Top 10 for a record 15 consecutive weeks, the longest run for an English-language title on the platform.
The film also made history in theaters. A special sing-along version topped the North American box office, earning around $18 million in its opening weekend. This made it Netflix’s biggest theatrical success to date.
Music played a huge role in the film’s popularity. The soundtrack became a worldwide hit, with the lead track “Golden” by the fictional group HUNTR/X, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The soundtrack album also topped the Billboard 200. Other songs like “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” became viral favorites among fans and reached the top 10 on the HOT 100.
KPop Demon Hunters follows Rumi, Mira, and Joya, members of a K-pop girl group who secretly fight evil spirits threatening the world.
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans said their inspiration came from the idea of using music as a weapon against darkness. Kang has previously mentioned she wanted to continue the story, saying, “There’s still so much left to explore in their world.”
While no official plot details have been shared, fans can expect the sequel to expand the story of the demon-hunting idols and introduce new characters and villains. The original team of HUNTR/X (and possibly Jinu) is expected to return for KPop Demon Hunters 2.
