RM (real name Kim Namjoon) stood before some of the world’s most powerful business and government leaders and made history. At the APEC CEO Summit held in Gyeongju, South Korea, the BTS leader became the first K-pop artist ever invited to deliver a keynote speech at the prestigious international forum.

The summit took place at the Gyeongju Arts Center and ran from October 28 to 31 under the theme “Bridge, Business, Beyond.” The session where RM spoke focused on “Cultural and Creative Industries in the APEC Region and Soft Power of K-culture.”

For the first time in the summit’s history, cultural industries shared the same platform as discussions about finance, technology, and trade. That alone showed how much global influence Korean culture now holds.

RM delivered his entire speech in English and addressed top CEOs and policymakers from 21 APEC member economies. Calm, confident, and deeply thoughtful, he shared his views on the power of art and culture to bring people together.

He wasn’t just speaking as a celebrity but as a creator who has seen firsthand how music can connect millions around the world.

One of the most memorable parts of his speech was his now-famous “Bibimbap philosophy.” RM explained that K-pop’s success comes from its openness to the world while still honoring Korea’s roots. He said:

“Just like Bibimbap … you take Korea’s unique aesthetics, emotions, and production system. But you don’t turn away elements of Western music, like hip-hop, R&B, and EDM.

He added, “These parts all keep their unique identities but mix together to make something new and fresh and delightful.”

The comparison was simple but powerful. Just like bibimbap, where each ingredient keeps its flavor yet creates something harmonious when combined. Similarly, K-pop blends influences from different cultures while remaining distinctly Korean.

RM also spoke about the importance of viewing culture as more than just entertainment. For him, it’s a global language capable of building bridges where politics sometimes cannot. He described K-pop as a “360-degree, total package.” It is not just music, but dance, performance, visual style, storytelling, and social media interaction all rolled into one creative ecosystem.

Then, RM turned his attention directly to the policymakers and business figures in the audience and made a heartfelt appeal:

“Culture and art are a powerful force that moves hearts. They are the fastest messengers that carry diversity and resonance,” he said. The 31-year-old rapper addressed the leaders of APEC, saying, “Your policies and support will be the canvas and playground for all the creators.”

BTS’s company, HYBE, participated as the summit’s Diamond Sponsor, the highest sponsorship tier available. It was the only entertainment company among official sponsors, and the chairman, Bang Si Hyu,k also attended the event alongside RM.

The appearance came after he completed mandatory military service and the release of his second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, in May 2024.

He has long been known for his love of art, museums, and literature, and his thoughtful approach to music. The summit organizers described him as “a creative powerhouse and avid art enthusiast.” They praised him for “crafting profound lyrics inspired by various art forms” and for his “philosophical approach to music.”

Meanwhile, BTS gears up for a billion-dollar comeback in March 2026, followed by a 65-date world tour.
