What happens when a commoner who has everything meets a prince who has nothing? That is the question at the heart of Perfect Crown, 2026’s most-awaited royal romance dramas. The series pairs two of South Korea’s biggest stars, IU and Byeon Woo Seok, for the first time as leading roles. The idol-actress is coming off the massive critical success of When Life Gives You Tangerines. She is paired with the Lovely Runner heartthrob, who became a global sensation seemingly overnight.
Also known as Wife of a 21st Century Prince, the series is directed by Park Joon Hwa. Park is known for many romantic comedies, including Alchemy of Souls, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, and Because This is My First Life.
‘Perfect Crown’ Release Date and Where to Watch
Perfect Crown is scheduled to premiere on April 10, 2026, after the conclusion of the preceding drama In Your Radiant Season. The release was delayed by a week due to the 2026 WBC broadcast.
The 12-episode series will air every Friday and Saturday on MBC in South Korea at 9:40 PM KST, concluding on May 16, 2026. International audiences can stream the romantic comedy on Disney+ and Wavve.
Plot Overview
Perfect Crown is set in an alternate version of modern-day South Korea that operates as a constitutional monarchy. In this world, royal titles and bloodlines still matter.
Sung Hee Joo, played by IU, is the ambitious and capable CEO of Castle Beauty, a top cosmetics brand. She is wealthy, powerful, and has everything she could want. However, no amount of money can buy the one thing she truly wants: royal status. She is also an illegitimate child, which, in the eyes of the aristocracy, makes her a commoner unfit for high society. Frustrated by the discrimination she faces, she decides to marry into the royal family.
Her target is Grand Prince Yi An, played by Byeon Woo Seok. He is the king’s second son and loved by the public for his dignified presence. Inside the palace, he is a prince in name only. As the second son, he has no claim to the throne. He is surrounded by political enemies who view him as a threat to be eliminated. He has royal blood but no real power, no wealth, and very little freedom. He is, in many ways, trapped.
Hee Joo proposes to the prince, not out of love, but to climb the social ladder. For her, it is a calculated move to gain the social status she desperately wants. For him, it is a strategic alliance that could offer protection and a chance to rewrite his destiny. This business arrangement, however, becomes complicated as they face opposition from the royal court, including the Queen Dowager.
Characters and Cast
- Sung Hee Joo (played by IU): A chaebol heiress and the CEO of the beauty brand. She is smart, ambitious, and not afraid to go after what she wants. Even if it means proposing marriage to a prince. IU has previously starred in Hotel Del Luna and My Mister.
- Grand Prince Yi An (played by Byeon Woo Seok): The king’s second son, who is adored by the public. Inside the palace, he has no allies and very little agency. This is his first major leading role following that success.
- Min Jeong-woo (played by Noh Sang-hyun): The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea. He is a friend of Prince Yi An and a key figure in the political landscape. Noh Sang Hyun is known for his roles in Pachinko and Love in the Big City.

The series also features Lee Yeon as Hee Joo’s chief secretary, Yoo Su Bin as Prince Yi An’s close aide. Lee Jae Won and Chae Seo An star as Hee Joo’s half-brother and his wife.

The drama is directed by Park Joon Hwa, known for his work on hit romantic comedies like What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim and the fantasy romance Alchemy of Souls. ‘Perfect Crown’ Trailer
The first teaser shows Sung Hee Joo being looked down upon by aristocrats for her “lack of class.” This motivates her bold plan of proposing contract marriage to the prince. The teaser then cuts to a scene where she directly proposes to a stunned Prince Yi An. He responds, “You would marry me for a completely meaningless title?”
Additional teasers released a couple of days ago show more romantic moments between the lead cast. These short teaser clips also highlight the cold, calculated start of the relationship between Hee Joo and Yi An. It gradually evolves into a more passionate and complicated romance.

Perfect Crown premieres on April 10, 2026, airing Fridays and Saturdays on MBC in Korea and streaming internationally on Disney+.
