A small market in Chuncheon has received an unexpected tourism boost thanks to a surprise visit from BTS member V. The K-pop superstar’s low-key stop has single-handedly put the Folk Flea market on the map.
A traditional market in Chuncheon has become a popular spot for K-pop fans. The market, located under the railroad tracks, offers a unique atmosphere with a striking view of the city’s tallest apartment building.
The Chuncheon Folk Flea Market has become the latest hotspot after a visit from BTS member V. The “Love Me Again” singer enlisted in the military in December 2023 and is currently serving in the 2nd Army Corps based in Chuncheon. He recently shared a photo of his visit to the market on his Instagram account on February 23.
When V shared a photo of himself in uniform, fans were left wondering where the picture was taken. It was soon revealed that the photo was taken at a quiet bench in the Chuncheon Folk Flea Market, situated under the Gyeongchun Line railroad tracks.
The Chuncheon Folk Flea Market is a 500-meter-long market located along the Gyeongchun Line. It operates five days a week and is situated near Namchuncheon Station, as well as the intercity and express bus terminals. This convenient location makes it easily accessible by train or bus. The market offers a variety of goods and services, making it a popular destination for those visiting Chuncheon.
Chuncheon City is investing 1 billion won to develop the Pungmul Market into a local attraction. It is all due to its recent surge in popularity following a visit from BTS V. The city plans to strengthen the market’s competitiveness as a tourist destination by next year, as part of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ specialized market development project.
The Chuncheon Folk Flea Market has come a long way since its early days as a street vendor market. Over the years, it has relocated twice, first to Yaksa Village in 1989 and then to its current location under the railroad overpass in Onui-dong.
Today, the market is a bustling hub of activity, surrounded by modern high-rise buildings and commercial districts. Despite its new surroundings, the market still retains its traditional charm.
On another note, V will complete his military service along with the remaining BTS members in June. Despite being in the military, he surprised fans with the release of two back-to-back singles “Winter Ahead” (feat. Park Hyo Shin) and “White Christmas” with the late Bing Crosby in November and December 2024 respectively.
