In a bid to address the long-standing issues of unfair practices and lack of transparency, the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) has established new guidelines for award ceremonies.

On July 4, The Korea Music Content Association explained that the purpose of establishing these guidelines was to address issues that have arisen at K-pop award ceremonies, which have been growing rapidly, and to support the ongoing progress of the K-pop industry.

Here are the new guidelines introduced by KMCA

  • Ensure thorough preparation and management to host a credible and dignified award ceremony
  • Establish fair and transparent award criteria to promote a culture of industry development
  • Respect the decisions of management companies and singers, and protect the rights of performers
  • Prioritize hosting award ceremonies domestically
  • Strong cooperation with the government to ensure successful and proper hosting of award ceremonies

KMCA is creating a standard contract to help singers and management companies have fair agreements when performing at award shows.

This contract will be released this month. It aims to

protect singers’ rights, reduce legal issues for management companies, and ensure fair terms for all parties involved.

K-pop award shows often lack written performance contracts, assuming they’re just ceremonial. The Korea Music Content Association wants the government to assign an agency to ensure contracts and safety guidelines are in place, easing the burden on management companies.
