Lai Kuanlin’s journey in the K-pop world is far from easy and he’s finally opening up about it.
The former youngest member of K-pop group Wanna One has spoken out about the ‘painful’ experiences he endured during his time with the group.
In a recent interview for a Chinese documentary, Lai shared his honest thoughts about his time with the group, saying, “I was never interested in singing or dancing in the first place. There was not a single moment of joy or happiness after my debut, it was painful.”
Lai Kuanlin revealed the reason for joining season 2 of Produce 101 and ultimately Wanna One, “I participated in the audition program to make money.”
On June 12, the 22-year-old Tawainese K-pop star officially announced retirement and career shift. He is no longer an idol, instead, pursuing a career as a film director.
In 2023, it was reported that he was a student at a prestigious film school in China, Beijing Film Academy.
After the disbandment of Wanna One, Lai Kuanlin won a lawsuit against Cube Entertainment in 2019 and successfully terminated his contract.
He has since moved to China where he directed a short film, Fighting in Winter and Spring, which went on to win five awards.
