‘“So come up with me I’ll take you high / That prima donna spice up your life.” With these bold lines in JUMP, BLACKPINK flips an old insult on its head. The quartet, Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé, sends a sharp message to critics who love to spread sexist rumors about powerful women.

Released on July 11, BLACKPINK confidently claims the word “prima donna” in the new song JUMP. It’s a term that has long been used to belittle successful women. By taking it back, the group follows in the footsteps of other female artists who have transformed sexist labels into signs of strength.

The Problem with ‘Prima Donna’

Traditionally, prima donna meant the ‘first lady’ of the opera, the main singer everyone came to see. However, over time, the word took on a negative twist, often used to label strong women as arrogant, spoiled, or “difficult” for simply knowing their worth.

It’s often thrown at successful women, especially in male-dominated industries, to imply they didn’t earn their place and only act entitled.

In K-pop, where female idols are heavily judged for how they act, look, and even dream bigger, the “prima donna” label is still used when women show confidence. BLACKPINK, one of K-pop’s biggest girl groups, knows this all too well. They have faced these kinds of digs for everything from their bold performances to their fashion and solo careers.

BLACKPINK Turns the Old Insult into a Power Statement

In JUMP, BLACKPINK flips the meaning of Prima Donna in their favor:

That Prima donna spice up your life / You know I got that shit that you like.

By saying it themselves, they take the sting out of the insult and turn it into a mark of pride and star quality. This idea is similar to MARINA’s 2012 hit “Primadonna,” where she mocked the stereotype while celebrating her own ambition. However, BLACKPINK pushes it further; they fully claim the word as part of who they are.

The JUMP lyrics also highlight sisterhood (“I’m with all of my sisters”) and freedom (“Breaking out of the system”), staying true to the themes of confidence and empowerment that have always defined BLACKPINK.

Since their hiatus in 2023, rumors swirled that the members didn’t get along and might break up soon. But the JUMP MV and lyrics prove theyare here to stay, showing a bond that’s more like sisters.

From Pretty Savage to Kill This Love, BLACKPINK has always championed self-confidence and power. With JUMP, they make it crystal clear: no sexist insult will ever hold them back.

Meanwhile, BLACKPINK’s JUMP music video racked up 29.5 million views on YouTube in just 24 hours. This marks their first comeback in nearly three years and has already shattered multiple records.

After wrapping up the Seoul leg of the world tour ‘Deadline’ on July 6, BLACKPINK will take over LA’s SoFi Stadium on July 12-13.
