Kang Daniel faced public backlash over comments he made while hosting Street Man Fighter on the platform UNIVERSE. He stated that working with male contestants was “more comfortable” and that female dancers “drained” his energy.
The remarks from a former Wanna One member were widely criticized as sexist and dismissive. He later clarified that the private message was meant to reflect his anxiety on set, but acknowledged it came across poorly and issued a public apology. He admitted the comments were “imprudent” and expressed remorse for causing misunderstanding and hurt.
Despite the controversy, production planners confirmed that Kang Daniel would return as the MC for Street Woman Fighter 2.
At a press conference held on August 17, he reaffirmed his gratitude for being invited back and said, “I spent much time reflecting on myself and my actions. I worried that I was not fit to be a host, but I was lucky enough to have the production staff ask me to return. I’m grateful that they consider me a part of the team.”
He pledged to show the public a better image and promised to do his best so he would not be an inconvenience to anyone.
The press briefing also introduced the eight dance crews competing this season, 1MILLION, BEBE, DEEP N DAP, Jam Republic, LadyBounce, Mannequeen, Tsubakill, and Wolf’Lo, as well as the main and special judges. MONSTA X’s Shownu and choreographer Monika lead the panel, supported by special judges Rie Hata, Aiki, Mike Song, and Bae Yoon-jung.
This season’s format includes a “K-Pop Death Match” mission, where each crew performs routines to iconic songs from SM, YG, JYP, and HYBE artists, such as aespa’s Next Level, BLACKPINK’s Shut Down, ITZY’s Not Shy, and LE SSERAFIM’s Eve.
Meanwhile, Street Woman Fighter 2 will premiere on August 22, 2023, at 10 PM KST.
