A dispute has surfaced in K-pop between boy group THE BOYZ and girl band QWER regarding the design of their official lightsticks. The controversy centers around the use of a megaphone-shaped concept, and both sides defend their creative choices. The situation has escalated into official statements, legal threats, and even fan protests in recent days.

As a result, ONEHUNDRED and 3Y Corporation has released formal statements to address the growing controversy.

QWER Stirred Controversy with Megaphone Lightstick for Tour

Earlier this month, QWER revealed its lightstick design ahead of its upcoming “ROCKNATION” world tour, scheduled from October 3 to 5 in Seoul. The lightstick takes the form of a megaphone, a reference to vocalist Siyeon’s use of a megaphone as a stage prop during performances.

While QWER’s agency, 3Y Corporation, and PRISMFILTER promoted the design as unique to the band’s image, however, some fans of THE BOYZ immediately raised concerns, pointing out similarities with the group’s official lightstick.

THE BOYZ’s Lightstick and Fandom Response

THE BOYZ introduced their megaphone-shaped lightstick in 2021, later securing a trademark for the design in 2022. The design incorporated a heart shape to emphasize its originality and has become an important symbol for the group’s fandom, The B.

After QWER’s announcement, fans of THE BOYZ criticized the similarities online and organized offline protests. Trucks with protest messages were sent to the offices of QWER’s agency, demanding them to redesign. Fans argued that the similarity undermines the identity and bond represented by THE BOYZ’s lightstick.

Official Statement from THE BOYZ’s Agency

On September 25, ONE HUNDRED Label, the agency representing THE BOYZ, issued a formal statement. The agency explained that it had requested QWER’s agency to modify the design but was unable to reach an agreement.

The statement included an apology to fans for the delay in responding to the matter and a promise to take decisive action:

Going forward, we will take strong action, including all legal procedures, in cooperation with the relevant authorities to prevent such incidents from happening again.

QWER’s Agency Responds to Allegations

On September 26, 3Y Corporation and PRISMFILTER released their own statement addressing the dispute. The agency emphasized that the design had undergone extensive review by lawyers, patent attorneys, and other experts.

The QWER light stick has no issues either in terms of design or copyright. We have received multiple reviews and opinions from lawyers, patent attorneys, and other experts, all of whom confirmed that there are no problems, including copyright infringement.

While we were in the process of holding smooth discussions and negotiations with ONE HUNDRED regarding this matter, we express deep regret that the other side suddenly announced plans for legal action.

This incident has become an opportunity for us to listen to diverse opinions. We will do our best to present a better image to both the artists and the fans moving forward. We will make every effort to protect the rights and interests of the artists and fans.

Meanwhile, the debate has since spread online, with The B insisting that QWER’s design undermines The Boyz’s lightstick identity. On the other hand, QWER’s supporters argue that a megaphone is a universal shape and not exclusive to any one group.
